The Blacksburg Electronic Village: A Study in Community Computing
نویسنده
چکیده
The Blacksburg Electronic Village1 was an early example of a Web-based community network. The project achieved mass-media notoriety by projecting the image of an idyllic but isolated rural community pioneering the electronic frontier of totally wired life. Early high points were coverage of the project by the New York Times on January 16, 1994, and by NBC Nightly News on February 10, 1994. The incestuous nature of soft news, and the growing popular fascination with the Internet during this period led to a steady stream of derivative reports throughout the next two years.

MOOsburg is a community-oriented multi-user domain. It was created to enrich the Blacksburg Electronic Village (BEV) by providing real-time, situated interaction and a place-based model for community information. Three versions of MOOsburg have been developed: a classic text-based MOO, a MOO extended to drive a Web-browser, and a Java-based system. The most recent version of MOOsburg is fundame...
متن کاملCommunity Collective Efficacy: Structure and Consequences of Perceived Capacities in the Blacksburg Electronic Village
Bandura’s social cognitive construct “perceived selfefficacy” has been used widely to understand individual behavior as a function of domain-specific beliefs about personal capacities. Collective efficacy is the extension of the self-efficacy construct to organizations and groups; it refers to beliefs about collective capacities in specific domains. Our research is investigating the use of coll...

Socio-technical systems are social systems that incorporate technological infrastructures. At the group level of analysis, the most important question in understanding socio-technical systems is how their technological infrastructures modulate collective capacities for performance and experience. This research addresses collective capacities with respect to various sorts of communities—interest...
متن کاملMOOsburg: multi-user domain support for a community network
Vision MUDs (multiuser domains) and MOOs (MUDs object-oriented) offer an interesting combination of synchronous and asynchronous communication mechanisms. People using a MOO can chat with one another, but the database that underlies the MOO is persistent: participants can create, modify, and manipulate objects, changing the state of the MOO for other participants. For example, people can leave ...
